Three of the most helpful sites are: Legendary Surfers, Surfing Related Papers and - for beginners -the StartLocal Guide to Surfing I also highly recommend purchasing the incomparable new annotated bibliography entitled 200 Years of Surfing Literature - also listed under BOOKS, etc. All the best for your project.

CORKYCARROLL.COM
Not a history site in the strictest sense, but you'll enjoy glimpses into surfing's
past, present and future in Corky Carroll's archive of weekly columns.
In case you don't know it, Corky is one of surfing's most celebrated surfers
and has won so many US and International surfing titles that I've lost count.
He was also surfing's first pro surfer, runs his own surf schools in California and
Costa Rica and conducts surf adventure tours. Versatile guy. Excellent site! Lotsa fun ...

http://vagabondsurf.com

A truly interesting and eclectic site that fits into several categories
including culture, art, photography and ...
There are also reviews, comments and so much more
I haven't had the time to explore - as yet!
I particularly like Nels Norene's pieces about Miki Dora -
so much so that I'm putting separate links for them below.

Welcome to SurfHumor.com

"This site was developed by surfers who have grown tired of unbridled competition,
angry exchanges in the line up, and a general decline in civility in surfing.
Our goal is to smother bad Karma with stupid jokes, silly stories,
fun photographs, and anything else of interest that comes along.

Our motto: Lighten up, for goodness sakes! Don't you know you're surfing?"

and he still is. Visit his site for a blast from the past, through to the present!

Grant Rohloff - Surf Photographer & Filmmaker
As one of surfing's top lensmen, Grant recorded some of
the most eloquent images from surfing's Golden Years.
Sadly, Grant passed away in 1989.  But thanks to his son Chris,

4. FILMS, VIDEOS & DVDs:

CHRIS  BYSTROM

Chris Bystrom was one of surfing's most creative and prolific filmmakers. He was also a brilliant publisher and entrepreneur. His tragic death in 2001 left a void which no one could fill, but his son Josh has published a website to keep Chris' legacy alive.
The website is well worth a visit. In addition to a beautifully written tribute by Josh, the Chris Bystrom Website gives you access to a complete list of Chris' films and their release dates, DVDs, back issues of Pacific Longboarder and Chris' seminal book about the renaissance of longboarding - "The Glide" - plus posters and t-shirts.

'The Shapemakers' DVD

'The Shapemakers' ...
A classic feature length film by Paul Kraus about surfboard shapers.
A candid view of modern surfboard shaping with interviews
with some of the most influential shapers of our time.

LIQUID TIME VIDEO ONLINE

A unique film of perfect waves
LIQUID TIME

Alby Falzon says:
"Mind-boggling! I must say I don't think I've seen a film that is so beautiful. If there were Academy Awards given out for photography, editing, concept and music in the surfing arena, Liquid Time would take the lot."

"Fascinating! Those microwaves break new ground in surf film. The music, the complete camera techniques. A superb job." - George Greenough

The FAR SHORE:
California, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, West Africa, Sahara Desert, Ireland, France & Fiji

In 1972, young Kevin Naughton and Craig Peterson took to the road with surfboards, camera gear
and an untamable desire for adventure. For ten years they scoured the planet in search of perfect waves
and the experiences only a traveler on the road encounters.

The FAR SHORE is the story of their adventures.

SURFING
FOR LIFE
a film by david i brown &
                roy earnest

"SURFING FOR LIFE, a vibrant and award-winning one-hour documentary about
inspiring well-spent lives, offers a totally fresh look at successful aging.
Narrated by Beau Bridges, it profiles ten legendary surfers who model healthy
aging by staying active and engaged into their 7th, 8th and 9th decades.
Through interviews, contemporary day-in-the-life footage, and a wealth of
rare archival material, the film provides an eloquent and powerful antidote
to the negative images of aging presented in America's youth-obsessed culture.

Staring: John H. "Doc" Ball, LeRoy "Granny" Grannis, Woody Brown,
Anona Napoleon, Fred Van Dyke, Rabbit Kekai, Shay Bintliff,
John Kelly, Peter Cole and Eve Fletcher
